Ecumenical Vigil for Peace
On Saturday, May 17, at 8:00 p.m., the Chicago Chorale again joins us for a evening of sacred music and Scripture as we pray for peace in the world and in our city. The Chorale will perform Friede auf Erden (Peace on Earth) by Arnold Schoenberg, and the monks will contribute Gregorian chant selected for the service.
In the Heart of the City, In the Heart of God
The Monastery of the Holy Cross is a contemplative Roman Catholic monastery following the Rule of Saint Benedict. We live a traditional life of ora et labora (prayer and work), alternating periods of communal and private prayer with manual labor. We serve the Church in a distinctive way by offering this witness in the heart of the modern city of Chicago.
For centuries, monks have retreated to deserted places, not merely to ‘get away’ from the hustle and bustle of urban life, but also because the desert is the place of confrontation with evil. Today’s desert can be found in the alienation, poverty and noise of the modern city. By God’s grace, we witness to the gospel by a life of community, simplicity, prayer and silence.
The peace that passes all understanding be with you!
We welcome all visitors to this site to share with us a bit of the joy and mystery of the contemplative life.
All who visit our site are remembered in our prayers. We ask for your prayers and support as well, as we seek to found a monastery for the new millennium.
Let us prefer nothing whatsoever to Christ! And may he lead us all to everlasting life!
